How to enable and disable 2-Step Verification for your Practice Dashboard

This article explains how to enable and disable 2-Step Verification for your Practice Dashboard.

2-Step Verification (also known as 2-factor authentication or 2FA) is an optional security measure that makes your Practice Dashboard even more secure.

Before you start

Before you begin the process of enabling 2-Step Verification, you will need to download an authentication app on your iOS or Android device that will allow you to generate the verification codes you’ll need to log in to your Practice Dashboard. Various authentication apps are available in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

How to enable 2-Step Verification

Select ‘Settings’ from the drop-down menu in the top-right of your Practice Dashboard and select ‘My Details’.

Select ‘Enable 2-Step Verification’.

Use the authentication app on your iOS or Android device to scan the QR code that appears in the pop-up box. The app will then generate a 6-digit code. Enter the code and select ‘Confirm’.

Next, your recovery codes will be displayed on screen. Please ensure that you print or save them as these are vital to access your Practice Dashboard if you get a new device, lose your device or delete your authentication app.

Select ‘OK, I’ve saved them’ once you’re ready to proceed.

As a final check, FreeAgent will ask you to enter one of these recovery codes. Enter one of the codes and select ‘Confirm’ to enable 2-Step Verification for your Practice Dashboard. Please note that this final check won’t use up the code and you’ll still be able to use it in future.

Viewing your recovery codes

You can view your recovery codes at any time by navigating to the ‘My Details’ area in your Practice Dashboard ‘Settings’ and then to the ‘2-Step Verification’ section.

Each of your 10 recovery codes can only be used once. If you need to generate a fresh set of recovery codes, select ‘Regenerate Recovery Codes’. Please note that by doing this, all your previous recovery codes, including those you’ve not yet used, will become invalid. Remember to print or save your new codes to a secure location.

What happens next?

After you’ve enabled 2-Step verification, when you next log in to your Practice Dashboard, enter your credentials and then enter a verification code generated by the authentication app on your iOS or Android device.

If you use 2-Step Verification, you'll need to enter a code from your authenticator app each time you wish to access the account, even if that device is known.

What happens if I can’t access my authentication app?

If you’re unable to access your authentication app, your recovery codes provide you with an alternative way to log in to your Practice Dashboard.

To use a recovery code, select ‘I want to use a recovery code’, enter one of the codes into the field and select ‘Log me in!’.
