An introduction to the MTD for Income Tax submission summary
This article explains how to access a summary of your clients’ Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax submissions.
The MTD for Income Tax submission summary provides you with a clear view of clients’ MTD for Income Tax submissions and what stage each submission is at in the filing process. You can also export this summary as a .CSV file. Read how to manage clients' MTD for Income Tax submissions in bulk.
Please note:
- The summary will only include clients who have been signed up to MTD for Income Tax and you'll only be able to perform the actions below on behalf of clients once you've set up your practice and clients for MTD for Income Tax.
- Senior account managers can export a summary for all of the practice’s clients, whereas non-senior account managers can only export a report for the clients who are assigned to them or part of the same account manager and client group.
- If a client has multiple users on their FreeAgent account, each user will be shown on a separate line on the .CSV file when you export the report.
To view the summary report, log in to your Practice Dashboard and select the ‘Taxes’ tab. Then, select 'MTD for Income Tax' from the drop-down menu.
Within each tab, you’ll see different kinds of MTD for Income Tax submissions. You can view the submission type, due date, filing status and the client approval status of the submission for each user.
You can use the drop-down menus above the list of clients to filter the results shown on the page. Please note that the filters you can apply differ between each tab.

In progress
Within the ‘In progress’ tab, you’ll see submissions that are pending, in other words submissions that have been sent to HMRC that are pending being finalised with HMRC.
Needs attention
Within the ‘Needs attention’ tab, you’ll see submissions that FreeAgent was unable to send to your clients for approval or to HMRC.
Some errors will only appear here after you’ve attempted to send an update to HMRC or an approval request to a client, such as the client's account containing unexplained bank transactions when trying to file a final submission.
If there is an error related to a submission on HMRC’s side, FreeAgent will automatically attempt to resubmit. If the issue persists, we will flag the relevant submission as needing attention.
Upcoming
Within the ‘Upcoming’ tab, you’ll see future submissions for which the submission window is not yet open.
Filed
Within the ‘Filed’ tab you’ll see submissions that were successfully filed to HMRC.
You can filter the status by ‘All statuses’, ‘Marked as filed’ and Filed’.
Searching on the submission summary page
Within all the tabs, you can use the search bar function on the page to search by either client (business) name or user name.
Exporting the MTD for Income Tax summary report
You can either export all the data on the Submission Summary page, or you can export your current view of it. Navigate to ‘Export’ to reveal a drop-down menu.
The ‘Export all data (CSV)’ option will download a .CSV file. For senior account managers, this file will contain a summary of all submission data for all the practice's clients. For non-senior account managers, this file will contain a summary of all submission data for their assigned or group clients.
The ‘Export current view (CSV)’ option will download a .CSV file containing only the data of your current view of the submission summary page. This means it will only download data within your current tab and that the applied filters on the tab will be applied to the exported .CSV files.
The report will appear in your browser as a .zip file, which will automatically download to your computer. Unzip the file to access a .CSV file of the report, which you can then open in your preferred spreadsheet software. The file will also be sent to the email address associated with your FreeAgent account.
If the .zip file doesn’t download automatically, select the 'manually download it here' link and follow the same process as above to access the report using your preferred spreadsheet software.
