Automate clients’ quarterly MTD for Income Tax updates and approvals
This article explains how to enable clients’ quarterly Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax updates to be submitted to HMRC automatically. It also explains how to enable quarterly updates to be sent to clients for approval automatically, if required.
You can set up settings for your practice so that clients’ quarterly MTD for Income Tax updates are sent to HMRC automatically. If approvals have been enabled for clients’ quarterly submissions, you can enable the updates to be automatically sent to the client for approval.
Please note:
- Only senior account managers can manage the practice’s default tax submission and access settings.
- MTD for Income Tax quarterly approvals and submission settings will be applied to all clients, including those that are linked to the dashboard. However, you can override these default settings for individual clients.
Enable automated quarterly updates
Select 'Settings' from the drop-down menu below your practice name.
Next, select ‘Tax submission and access control’ from the ‘My practice’ area.
Select the ‘Income Tax’ tab.
To send clients' quarterly updates to HMRC automatically, select ‘Yes’ to ‘Send automated updates to HMRC’.
If approvals have been enabled for clients’ quarterly updates, the automated submissions will only be sent once the client, or the account manager, has approved the update.
However, you can choose to send the automated updates to HMRC without clients' approval if you prefer. To do this, tick the ‘Send automated quarterly updates, even if the client hasn't approved' checkbox and enter how many days after the client received the approval request to send the unapproved update in the 'Send unapproved updates to HMRC after X Days' field.
The quarterly updates will be automatically marked as approved and sent to HMRC. The updates will show as approved by the client’s account manager in the Audit Trail report.
Enable automated approvals for quarterly updates
If approvals have been enabled for clients’ quarterly updates, select ‘Yes’ to ‘Send automated client approval requests’, to send the approval requests to clients automatically.
Next, choose how many days before the filing deadline you’d like the updates to be sent to the client for approval.
Select ‘Save changes’ at the bottom of the screen to complete the process.
The client will then receive an email with a link to log in to their account to approve and sign the update.
