Approve and sign MTD for Income Tax submissions
This article explains how to approve and sign submissions that your accountant has sent you for Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax in FreeAgent.
If you’re a FreeAgent Partner, please read how to send MTD for Income Tax submissions to a client for approval.
If you use FreeAgent with your accountant or bookkeeper and they’re a FreeAgent Partner, they may submit your quarterly updates, end-of-year updates and/or final declarations on your behalf and send them to you to approve first. That's what we're going to look at here.
If you’re not currently working with an accountant, you may wish to find one through FreeAgent CoPilot.
Please note:
- You’ll need level 7 access or above to approve MTD for Income Tax submissions.
- When you approve a submission, any previous submissions in the tax year will also be automatically approved.
If you have more than one income stream, for instance if you're self-employed and also a landlord, you'll need a sole trader and an unincorporated landlord account in FreeAgent. You can find out what counts as multiple income streams, as well as tips for managing more than one income stream, in our how to efficiently manage multiple income streams guide.
Approve and sign an MTD for Income Tax submission
If your accountant or bookkeeper sends an MTD for Income Tax submission for you to approve, you may receive an email with a link to log in to your account to approve and sign the update if your accountant has chosen to send an email.
The email will indicate which type of submission needs to be approved.
When you click on the button in the email and log in, you’ll see an option to ‘Approve and sign’ the submission at the top-right of the MTD for Income Tax area within your account.
Alternatively, if you don’t receive email notification from your accountant to review a submission, you can log in to your account and navigate to 'Taxes', then 'Income Tax'. Finally, click the year in question.
Once you’ve reviewed the figures in FreeAgent, enter your name in the ‘Signed by’ field, tick the checkbox to confirm that you’re happy for the submission to be sent to HMRC and select ‘Approve and sign’.
