Take an in-person payment using Tap to Pay on mobile
This article explains how to use Tap To Pay to take a payment for your invoice in-person via the FreeAgent mobile app.
Please note:
- If you’re an iOS user, your device will need to be running on iOS version 17 or later in order to use Tap to Pay.
- You'll need to have set up Tap to Pay before following the steps below.
- PIN entry may occasionally be required by your customers, depending on the limits set by their bank. Stripe also has its own minimum and maximum charge amounts and monitors Tap to Pay for any potential fraudulent PIN-related activity.
1. Create the invoice
Tap the ‘☰’ (mobile app navigation menu) button and select 'Invoices'.
Tap the ‘+’ at the bottom of the screen and follow the steps for creating an invoice using the FreeAgent mobile app.
In the ‘Payments enabled’ section, make sure that Stripe has been selected. To choose Stripe, or set up Stripe as the default payment option for all future invoices you create, select 'Manage' and toggle the Stripe option.
Select ‘Create invoice & add line items’ and enter the necessary details for the invoice.
2. Request the payment
After a line item is added, select the ‘Request payment’ button.
To take the in-person payment immediately, select ‘Tap to Pay’.
You’ll see a loading screen that says ‘Generating payment’.
If you have an Android device, you'll need to make sure Near Field Communication (NFC) has been enabled on your device. If it's currently disabled, select 'OK' in the pop-up window.
Toggle the 'NFC and contactless payments' option to 'On'.
3. Take the payment
The Tap to Pay screen will appear and your customer can hold their card or payment device to your phone to scan.
If the payment fails for any reason, you'll be prompted to either try again through Tap to Pay or using a QR code.
If you choose to try the payment again using a QR code, your customer can scan the QR code using their own device to pay.
You’ll have the option to share a Stripe receipt with you customer which will detail the amount paid and the invoice that the payment is connected to.
The invoice will show the payment is in progress when a payment has been made for it using Tap to Pay.
When the Stripe payout is made, the invoice will show that the payment is complete.
If the payment failed for any reason, the invoice will show this and you should go to your Stripe account for more details.
