How FreeAgent handles sign-up attempts from prohibited jurisdictions

This article explains how FreeAgent handles sign-up attempts from locations that are deemed to be ‘prohibited jurisdictions’.

Prohibited jurisdictions are locations from which individual customers are not currently able to sign up to FreeAgent. These locations may be subject to sanctions, enhanced financial crime risks or they may pose a reputational risk to FreeAgent. Some locations are prohibited to simplify FreeAgent’s regulatory compliance requirements or to align to our internal risk appetite. Automated tooling and technologies are in place within FreeAgent to help identify and block sign-up from prohibited jurisdictions.

Currently, FreeAgent deems the following locations to be prohibited jurisdictions. Therefore individuals in these locations will be unable to sign up to and use FreeAgent:

  • Afghanistan*
  • Angola
  • Belarus*
  • British Virgin Islands
  • Bulgaria
  • Cameroon
  • China
  • Côte d'Ivoire
  • Cuba*
  • Democratic Republic of Congo
  • Haiti
  • Iran*
  • Japan
  • Kenya
  • Lao People’s Democratic Republic
  • Lebanon
  • Morocco
  • Myanmar
  • Nepal
  • North Korea*
  • Papua New Guinea
  • Russia*
  • South Sudan
  • Syria*
  • Venezuela*
  • Vietnam
  • Yemen

* If you attempt to log in to an existing FreeAgent account from these locations, your log in attempt will be blocked.

As some areas of Ukraine (Crimea, Luhansk, Donetsk and other non-Ukrainian Government controlled territory such as Kherson and Zaporizhzhia) are under Russian control, we will monitor sign-up requests from Ukraine on a case-by-case basis.

Please note that the list of prohibited jurisdictions can change over time and FreeAgent will adapt its approach to handling sign-up attempts from these locations as appropriate.

If you feel that access to your account has been blocked incorrectly, please contact our support team by selecting the blue Help button at the bottom of the screen and we will investigate the issue.
